Description
Alexandre DUMAS. To my friend Charpillon. *La Revue nocturne*. Signed autograph poem, undated [c. 1848], surrounding an engraving by Raffet dated 1836. 57 x 46.50 cm. Framed. 22 quatrains. Faded ink. Minor imperfections to the frame. ‘When the hour of mourning has come / When midnight chimes in unison / And from the bronze in the clouds / The final tremor has died away […] // Such is the sombre spectacle / Which, at the stroke of midnight, it is said / As he reflects on his fallen greatness / The other Napoleon passes by.” Louis Étienne Charpillon (1818–1894), a notary in the Yonne department, supported Dumas and hosted him at his home during his election campaign. The two men continued to maintain a friendly relationship, with Charpillon regularly opening his purse to the penniless Dumas. In 1865, as security for the sums he owed him, Dumas made the notary his sole heir.
