Description
Le Moustiquaire. A journal published by Messrs Dumasnoir and Co. Published on Thursdays and Sundays. From No. 1 (2 February [1854]) to No. 7 (26 February 1854). 4 pp. in folio each.
A very rare early issue of this satirical journal based on *The Musketeer*. It ran to a total of 33 issues and ceased publication on 3 April 1854.
It was the work of Alfred Delvau and Antonio Watripon who, having initially hidden behind a fictional editor, Anténor Dumasnoir, revealed their identities in issue no. 6 after announcing the death of poor Anténor.
Highly amusing, the editors take aim at both the public and private man, and first and foremost at the very raison d’être of *Le Mousquetaire*, which served as a publicity tool for Dumas. Dumasnoir thus declares in the first issue: ‘I am creating a newspaper all for myself, where I shall speak only of myself, where you shall speak only of me, where everyone shall speak only of me’, and to an interlocutor who tells him he is a great man, Anténor replies, ‘I am the great man’.
The newspaper also takes aim at the novelist, and *Le Moustiquaire* serialises Dumasnoir’s memoirs; it follows this with *Travel Impressions*, and mocks Dumas’s prolific output…
Parodies abounded in the nineteenth century… but not everything was parodied: only works that caused a great stir. *Le Moustiquaire*, which certainly had a very limited circulation – hence its great rarity – proves just how successful *Le Mousquetaire* was; and in a way, by parodying it, it too helped to publicise Dumas.
Traces of mould on the inner margin (frayed) of all issues.
Extremely rare
