Description
(Autograph) – Alexandre DUMAS. Signed autograph letter to his solicitor Charles-Denis Duverdy. Undated [c. 1860]. 2 pp. ½ in-8 on blue paper. Dumas and his creditors: ‘ I shall begin by drawing your attention, from a moral standpoint, to the strange nature of the situation – it is the very people entrusted with settling my affairs who, once they have been settled with the money I gave them as remuneration for their work, turn against me and destroy what they have achieved. ’ To the creditors: ‘All objections will be set aside… and I shall surrender my entire income—some thirty thousand francs—without setting anything aside for myself. Is this not what, in law, is called a waiver of assets? In four or five years, it would all be over… The matter depends on Mr Letrampy, I believe – my daughter will take a letter to Princess Mathilde… You will understand that this new struggle… is for my children and not for me. I have another five or six years to live and I shall always work enough to feed myself.
