Description
‘This story should appeal to fans of Alexandre’ (www.dumaspere.com) Alexandre DUMAS. *Le Père la Ruine*. Paris, Michel Lévy Frères, 1860. In-18, aubergine half-basane, smooth spine decorated with double gilt bands, speckled edges [2 ff.], 320 pp. First French edition; the original was published in Brussels the same year in the Hetzel collection. The novel was written in collaboration with Gaspard de Cherville, who no doubt suggested the subject: the anglers on the banks of the Marne whom he had known for twenty years. Dumas sets the stage for the drama to come by beginning his story during the Revolution. He details the genealogy of his hero, François Guichard, known as ‘Père la Ruine’, who comes from a long line of poachers, all of whom died by hanging. With the context established and Guichard’s early misfortunes recounted (the death of his sons during the Napoleonic Wars, followed by that of his wife), the novel transports us to the beginning of the July Monarchy: Guichard’s village, with its simple, rural way of life, is suddenly overrun by Parisians who bring with them noise, insincere sentiments and debauchery. And so the drama begins. Vicaire III, 424; Talvart, 178 B; Munro, 325. Minor scuffs on the spine, a few minor foxing spots. Dumas’s return to romantic drama. A rare find.
