Description
A drama under the hot Marseille sun
Alexandre DUMAS. Monsieur Coumbes. Paris, Librairie Nouvelle, A. Bourdilliat et Ce, 1860.
In-18, fawn half-morocco, decorated ribbed spine, speckled edges.
[2 ff.], 316 pp.
A reprint under a new title of *L’Histoire d’un cabanon et d’un chalet*, originally published in Brussels in the Hetzel collection in 1859.
The novel, set in the vicinity of Marseille around 1831, was written in collaboration with Cherville. Its title has varied depending on the edition: *Le Fils du forçat*, *Monsieur Coumbes*.
What a series of dramas under the hot Marseille sun! The only good deed Monsieur Coumbes has ever done is to have taken in the wife and son of a galley slave. Otherwise, he is odious, petty, mean-spirited, stupid and jealous…: jealous of the young Marius, who possesses all the qualities he lacks; jealous of his wealthy neighbour, Mr Riouffe, whose garden is brimming with flowers whilst the ground around his own shack remains barren…
Amidst Coumbes’s desire for revenge, the romance blossoming between Marius and the neighbour’s daughter, and the return of the convict, the drama begins to unfold.
Vicaire III, 420–421; Talvart, 175 B; Munro, 313.
Spine slightly rubbed, minor foxing, nothing serious
