Description
(Alexandre DUMAS). Bouts-rimés, published by Alexandre Dumas. Paris, Librairie du Petit Journal, 1865. In-12, orange half-basane, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fleurons, black morocco fittings, bookplate. [2] ff., [1 f.] blank, X, 378 pp. First edition. ‘A collection without precedent in literary history,’ asserts Dumas in the preface to the work, of which he is merely the editor. Having submitted to the readers of *Le Petit Journal* a list of 24 rhymes found amongst papers from the time when Méry, their friends and he himself used to amuse themselves by composing rhyming couplets, Dumas was surprised to find his readers taking to the game and sending him their verses, which he compiled in this volume. He includes at the beginning the poems that he and Méry had composed. Several poems are inspired by Dumas. For instance, a certain G. Dorval titled his ‘Alexandre Dumas’, which begins as follows: ‘Dumas is refined, amiable and gentle as a woman / his genius created Kean and Catilina / And all who have read him love him with heart and soul… / For his brilliant mind never prys […]’ In the preface, Dumas stated: ‘If, by chance, my subscribers attach any value to my autograph, they may place it at the beginning of the volume… It cannot be said that my autographs, sold for 600 francs at the Pittsburgh fair, have given me an exaggerated sense of pride’. Vicaire III, 428; Munro, 343. Spine faded and rubbed, corners and edges slightly rubbed… A most curious collection.
