An Italian ‘Werther’: This is a translation of Ugo Foscolo’s novel *Ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis*, itself inspired by Goethe’s *Werther*: an unknown young poet falls in love with a young woman, Teresa, whom her father has destined for another man. As a dutiful daughter, she renounces the young man, who leaves her in despair and sets off to travel throughout Italy. There, he becomes imbued with a sense of national pride.
The patriotic spirit pervading this work surely inspired Dumas to make it known in France.
Pier-Angelo Fiorentino, author of the preface, whom Dumas had met in Naples, contributed to the translation of Ugo Foscolo’s epistolary novel.
