Description
A rare letter from his youth Alexandre DUMAS the Younger. Autograph signed letter to Ligier. 22 October 1840. 1 p. in-8, address. ‘You were kind enough to send me two tickets for *Henri III*… would it be too forward of me to make a similar request today… for two stalls for Saturday, if that is the day my father’s play is being performed… They would be for my mother, who did not attend the premiere… Alex. Dumas the Younger. 6, rue de Courcelles. Pension Hénon. ” A lovely letter in which one senses the love that the young Alexandre (aged 16) felt for his mother, Catherine Labay, with whom he was staying whilst on leave from boarding school. In 1840, the teenager was all the closer to her as he had taken a dim view of his father’s marriage to Ida Ferrier. His admiration for his prodigal father had not, however, diminished. This refers to the revival of *Henri III et sa cour*, a play first performed in 1829 at the Théâtre Français. Pierre Mathieu Ligier appeared in numerous plays by Dumas, notably creating the title role in *Caligula* at the Théâtre Français in 1837. He was very close to Dumas.
