Description
Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX. Bust of Alexandre Dumas the Younger.
Bronze with a brown patina. 46 x 34 x 22 cm.
On the left-hand side of the plinth: ‘all Sommo Pensieroso / Alexandre Dumas the Younger / Suo Amico / JB Carpeaux 1873’.
A famous bust created by Carpeaux, a close friend of Dumas the Younger who acted as a witness at his wedding and served as his executor.
Dumas commissioned it in 1872 as a gift to the Comédie-Française. Carpeaux produced it in terracotta (Musée de la Vie romantique) and in plaster (two replicas at the Musée d’Orsay). The marble version, dated 1874, was exhibited at the Salon that year and attracted considerable attention. Zola described it as ‘magnificent’. The critic from the *Revue des Deux-Mondes* praised “a troubled figure, full of life” which aptly represents “the misanthropic poet, the sorrowful moralist, the writer who is at once mystical and trivial. ”
Finally, a number of bronze replicas were produced, such as this one.
