Description
Alexandre DUMAS the Younger. *La Femme de Claude*. Play. With a preface. Paris, Michel Lévy, 1873. In-8, plum-coloured half-calf, covers and spine preserved, untrimmed, paper slightly browned. [2 ff.], LXXXI pp., [1 f.], 87 pp., engraved portrait added on China paper. Special edition, not sold commercially and presented by Dumas the Younger to his friends, printed in a run of 31 copies; this one on unlined Holland paper. Vicaire III, 476. Bound at the head: Autograph signed letter from Cham, 8 December 1859, 1 p. in-8, envelope. The play premiered at the Gymnase-Dramatique on 16 January 1873. In a polemical pamphlet, *L’Homme-femme* (1872), Dumas thundered ‘Kill her!’ with regard to the adulterous woman. In this play, he put that summary advice into practice. Cuvillier-Fleury, in an article in the *Journal des débats*, argued, in the name of the Gospel, against killing the adulterous woman; Dumas the Younger sets out his position in his lengthy preface. An important play which complements *L’Homme-femme* and foreshadows his work on the right to divorce. Enclosed: Al. DUMAS Fils. *L’Homme-Femme*. Reply to Mr Henri d’Ideville. Twenty-sixth edition. Paris, Michel Lévy, 1872. In-18, green morocco-bound half-leather, smooth spine slightly rubbed, decorated with four gilt fillets, speckled edges.
