‘As you are very influential… on the purchasing committee for the Luxembourg, I am writing to ask you to take an interest in the fine painting by Protais, for which a place has been designated in your new museum. Protais is asking twelve thousand francs for this painting… This remarkable canvas must not be allowed to go abroad… ”
Alexandre Protais (1825–1890) was a close friend of Dumas the Younger. A protégé of Princess Mathilde, godmother to Jeannine, Dumas’s youngest daughter, he was her godfather.
