Description
Alexandre DUMAS the Younger. *The Princess of Baghdad*. A play in three acts. Paris, Calmann Lévy, 1881. In-8, half-percaline with salmon-coloured corners, covers intact, untrimmed, lined slipcase, ex-libris, dedicatory inscription. [3 ff.], 95 pp. First edition. The play premiered at the Théâtre Français on 31 January 1881. A play with a thesis, as is always the case with Dumas, it seeks to demonstrate that maternal love is a woman’s safeguard. The audience caused quite a commotion during the performance and Barbey d’Aurevilly, ever the gentleman, asked: ‘Is this the end of a reign? […] I am not saying that *La Princesse de Bagdad* is his *Battle of Waterloo* but his *Fontrenaibleau farewells* ’! Vicaire III, 482. Léontine Arman de Caillavet’s copy, with a lovely dedication by the author and her bookplate.
