Description
Alexandre DUMAS the Younger. *Denise*. A play in four acts. Paris, Calmann Lévy, 1885. In-8, half-percaline with corner pieces, covers preserved, untrimmed, bookplate. [3 ff.], 145 pp., with an added engraved portrait. The play premiered at the Théâtre Français on 19 January 1885, featuring the cream of the company, including Coquelin and Coquelin the Younger, Reichemberg, Bartet, Pierson and Amel. It was inspired by the life of Adèle Caussin, known as Cassin. Denise, a single mother, conceals the birth of her son, who died in infancy. On the eve of her marriage, she reveals her past mistake to her future husband. Vicaire III, 483–484; Talvart, 58; Carteret, 249. Bound at the front: Autograph signed letter, undated, 1 p. in-8 on paper embossed with his initials.
