Jeannine DUMAS D’HAUTERIVE, the youngest daughter
Jeannine DUMAS (1867–1943) was the youngest daughter of Alexandre Dumas the Younger and his first wife Nadine (Nadejda). Jeannine, a discreet yet determined woman, was not content merely to be ‘the daughter of’ and ‘the wife of’; even after marrying Ernest d’Hauterive, she carved out a life of her own. She trained as a nurse and became one of the first qualified Red Cross nurses. During the war, she was called up as a senior nurse with the Society for the Relief of Wounded Soldiers. Her dedication was recognised with the Cross of the Legion of Honour in 1921.
Deeply proud of her paternal ancestry, Jeannine d’Hauterive, despite family tensions, was determined to preserve the memory of her grandfather and father, and she devoted herself to Villers-Cotterets…
