An intriguing godson: Émile de La Charlotterie
It has not yet been established what connections Émile de La Charlotterie’s mother had that led to her son, born in 1845, becoming Dumas the Younger’s godson. According to Théodore Botrel, he ‘resembled, in every detail, Alexandre Dumas, of whom he was, I believe, the… grandson. ’ This claim is not supported by anything in this correspondence, nor is it confirmed by any other known document, given that Émile was an illegitimate son. Alexandre Dumas the Younger consistently provided financial support to both mother and son. As an adult, Émile was frequently called upon by him in various ways. He was part of the family circle, and Alexandre Dumas the Younger included him in his will, granting him a life annuity. This correspondence is of the utmost importance for understanding the Dumas family.
