Description
Émile de LA CHARLOTTERIE. A significant collection of handwritten documents (correspondence and miscellaneous papers) which shed light on his character and his relationship with Alexandre Dumas the Younger and his family. Deeply involved in family life, Émile – and later his wife Jacqueline – were committed to keeping the memory of Dumas the Younger alive. - Émile de La Charlotterie and Caroline de La Charlotterie. Exchanged correspondence. 24 letters from Émile to his mother (1861–1871). Approximately 80 pp., in-12 and in-8 – 15 letters from Charlotte, 1864–1870 [?], 28 pp., in-8. – 31 August 1861: ‘Mr Dumas is very kind to me… This lady is also very kind to me. I go hunting with Mr Dumas in the park, which is very large… This lady and Mr Dumas are always arguing; he agrees with me and this lady agrees with her daughter… Everyone is raving about red beasts… The lady I’m staying with is a Russian princess… Perhaps we’ll be receiving the Emperor, who’s coming to see the mowing machines in the park…’ – 20 September 1861: “I didn’t go to Paris, but whilst I was away, a nine-month-old baby arrived there, which gave me great pleasure, as you can imagine. To top it all off, it’s a little girl—there’s nothing more to say; thankfully, she never cries ” – 2 August 1867: “I’m not afraid of Mr Dumas; I’ll tell him what you’ve told me. Don’t worry; I know it costs me to speak as he does, and I promise you I’ll make him realise that I’m a man. ” – 10 August 1867: “Look how Mr Dumas is changing; he may be all on his own over there; he may have sent Mrs Dumas to the devil and left. I’m not ready to write to him yet, but in my next letter I’ll tell you just that.” – 8 August 1870: “I’ve received a long letter from Mr Dumas: ‘My dear child, rest assured that when the war is over there will be a European disarmament; this is the last war there will be in Europe… worry about nothing but yourself for the moment; I shall send your mother whatever she needs.’… There’s no way of getting a promise out of him…’ – undated ‘I am delighted to see, whatever you may say, that you are in better health, for your wickedness is returning, and when it comes to selfishness and ingratitude, you leave my illustrious godfather far behind you.’ – 6 July 1867: “In your letter to Mr D., jot down what’s on your mind on a small piece of paper in your next letter; then I’ll tell you what to do and add my own thoughts, my dearest Bébé… ” – Thursday evening: “Mr D. is very annoyed; he’s been duped by a scheming woman who possesses every trick of hypocrisy and is ruining him. She’s penniless; it’ll end very badly for her and she’ll go and die far away, and I’ll be glad ” – 10 August 1867: “I think Mr D is alone, as you say; he must have been too upset and has left. He’ll come back for you one day—you’ll see—but I know how to handle him: you must always speak to him boldly; gentleness and fear displease him… Do you remember how successful our two letters were… He’s leaving you there so that you might learn to think like a man. Besides, he’s stingy and selfish, and he justifies it all to his own conscience…’ – 20 August 1867: Write to Mr D and ask him for money… you know his circle well and the harm that can be done to us… and take great care with spelling mistakes; it is very important, and you make some very gross ones.” - Émile de La Charlotterie to his wife Jacqueline. 14 signed autograph letters. 46 pp. in-8 - Émile de La Charlotterie. 3 autograph letters to his daughter-in-law Germaine - Germaine to her mother. 2 autograph letters - 23 unlabelled photographic portraits of family members. - Estate of Alexandre Dumas the Younger: acceptance of a bequest by Émile de La Charlotterie. 23 March 1896. - Judicial deposit of Émile’s will. 2 July 1917. - Count Primoli. 12 autograph letters to Émile de La Charlotterie. - Béatrix Dussane. 9 letters to Jacqueline de La Charlotterie. 17 pp. - Cécile Sorel. 4 signed autograph letters to Mr or Mrs de La Charlotterie. 1912. 8 pp. in-8. - Around 100 letters from various senders (theatre directors, journalists, friends) addressed to Émile or his family. Many relate to Alexandre Dumas the Younger.
