The author of *The Lady of the Camellias*
Eugénie DOCHE. 11 autograph signed letters, including 3 to Alexandre Dumas. Undated, 1872. 13 pp. in-8.
- ‘ Alas! My dear friend, the management of the Vaudeville has passed into the hands of Mr Carvalho; no new engagements are being made at the moment… I am a little selfish and would very much like to see you both stay in Brussels, as I shall certainly be returning there next winter… ” – “Tell me now, my poor dear friend, your inexhaustible wellspring of kindness, charm and generosity is having the greatest difficulty in getting your manuscript back; they’ve promised it to me for 3 September and will return it to me along with the reading committee’s decision… ”
– undated: “Will you put me up in your box? Has Alexandre completely forgotten me?” – To a “dear director”: ‘What would you think of Fond-Dugué collaborating? We mustn’t count on either [?] or Dennery…’
– To a ‘dear director’: she requests a ‘small box’ for the evening’s performance. – A thought for an album? : “I grew old very early, so I have remained young for a very long time”
– To Blandin, a theatre director, to whom she sets out her conditions for performances in the provinces: a fixed fee of 200 francs plus a share of the takings, and she proposes: ‘La Princesse Georges, Adrienne Lecouvreur, Le Supplice d’une femme (the Lady [of the Camellias], which is always a guaranteed box-office success), Le Demi-Monde… I have never been to Reims and would gladly give a few performances there…’
– To Auber. She asks him for a dressing room as she is “very keen to hear my young protégée tomorrow”.

- Adèle DALLOZ (sister of Eugénie Doche). Letter to the English critic Johnson. She recommends to him a promising but somewhat shy young tenor, Mr Montariot, who has just been engaged at Covent Garden. ‘He will be very happy on the day you devote a few lines to him in one of your letters to *Le Figaro*… My sister, Ms Doche, has asked me to send you her regards…’
