To the publisher Cadot. 2 pp. in-8. ‘When, whilst finishing *Olympe de Clèves*, I deigned to correspond with you, it was simply to please Dumas… I knew full well that you are a boorish and crude character, infatuated with the hard cash you scrape together from men of letters… ” – undated [1853?]. 2 pp. in-12. “If I weren’t in the midst of moving house and dealing with the builders, I would already have set to work on the draft of *Olympe*. But I don’t even have a desk to write at. Please sketch out this plan based on our book, and in four to five days I shall write as much as I can for the play.” – undated [1853?], 2 pp. in-8. He is in the midst of the move: ‘Please sketch out the plan based on our book… once four to five days have passed, I shall be able to write as much as you wish of this play… If you would like us to discuss *Olympe*, let me know where and when I can see you.’ – undated [1853]. 1 p. in-8: Mr Cadot has just written to me, refusing to continue payment for *Ingénue*, a letter from Goujat. I am annoyed that you have once again exposed me to the mudslinging of that fellow… ” – 16 November. To a dear friend, 4 pp. in-8: “I do not want you to consider me in your debt. I am yours, in heart and pen, in counsel and deed; ready to help you in any way I can. Make use of me. ’ He points out the pages of his book *La Place de Grève* that he should read. ‘In this way, dear friend, you will understand the thought and feel the meaning of the work… and if you do me a little publicity, my publisher will bless you…’ – undated, 1 p. in-8. He does not know Francisque’s address. – To a ‘dear Michel’. 1 p. in-8. He cannot give artists brochures costing 10 sous and is awaiting brochures similar to the others. ‘My servant will wait to collect them, as I have to sign them before they can be distributed.’ – ‘Wednesday’, undated. 1 p. in-8. ‘It is easy for me to provide you with the clarification you have asked for. And if you would be so kind as to call by tomorrow morning… I shall have the honour of assisting you.” – 6 March 1840 to his “dear Benoit”, 1 p. in-8 on the Revue et Gazette’s letterhead. Regarding an order for paper. – 5 February 1849 to Dulong (agent of the Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers) with P.A.S. from Mademoiselle George. 2 pp., 8vo. He asks him to “give Mademoiselle George, on my behalf, the sum of five hundred francs, to be taken from the royalties if necessary.” – Undated. 1 p., in-4. Regarding a meeting he wishes to have with his correspondent in Bougival. – Undated. 4 pp. in-8. He is pleased to have been introduced to Robaut, ‘whose work on Delacroix already interests me, and I shall count myself among his subscribers. ‘As for the work that concerns him (that ceiling in my study in the mansion on Rue de Bruxelles), it is nothing but a legend, recklessly exploited, which I have never consented to endorse… ’ He had this ceiling painted by his friend Despléchin… The figure was painted by a pupil of Delacroix…
