In-12, rust-coloured half-percaline with worn corners, title label in green morocco, covers and spine preserved, full-height gilt monogram. [3 ff.], 284 pp., frontispiece portrait, illustrations and facsimiles. First edition. One of the most important publishers of the Romantic era, he succeeded in attracting the most talented young authors to his firm. On his death, *L’Illustration* paid tribute to him in these terms: ‘Eugène Renduel was the publisher who contributed most to consolidating the Romantic school in its triumph. It was he who pronounced a sort of “fiat lux” for the masterful works of the time. His octavo editions, illustrated with vignettes by Porret and the Johannots, lent even greater prominence to Victor Hugo, Charles Nodier, Théophile Gautier and others. Whilst he did a thriving trade with the great writers of his time, he gave them half the credit for the success of the enterprise. The catalogues he left behind are literary monuments. There is no bibliophile who does not make it a point to consult them, in order to gain an understanding of what the French spirit was like in 1830.” From the library of Jules Marsan, bearing his full-length gilt monogram.
