Sévigné" pendant
Yellow gold, emeralds and green stones on foil, composed of three openwork motifs with foliate decoration, the first motif in the form of a knot, the last in the form of a Greek cross.
Marked by the city of Cordoba.
Spain, 18th century.
Gross weight: 17.5 g.
Traces of soldering, minor knocks, chips, alterations.
Originally used as a bodice ornament or worn around the neck, this type of jewellery was fashioned in the workshops of Cordoba from the beginning of the third quarter of the century. This knot was inspired by the ornamental compositions of Gilles Legaré, jeweller to King Louis XIV, whose collection, "Livre des ouvrages d'orfèvrerie" (1663), widely disseminated this motif in Europe. The longevity of the design - almost eighty years separate the collection from the object - testifies to the lasting influence of French sources in 18th-century Iberian goldsmithing. It is also known as the "Sévigné".
A very similar "lazo con cruz", also of Spanish origin, is in the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid (inv. 2140); see L. Arbeteta, "La joyería española: de Felipe II a Alfonso XIII en los museos estatales", Madrid, Ministerio de Cultura, 1998, p. 86, no. 10. It can also be compared with the 18th-century Spanish half-piece in the Musée National des Châteaux de Malmaison et Bois-Préau (inv. M.M.51.2.88 and M.M.51.2.101). A drawing of a similar piece of jewellery also appears in the "Códice del Joyel de Guadalupe" (fol. 46r, no. 1).
Similar pieces have also come up for auction: a gold and emerald articulated necklace bearing the Cordoba hallmark, Spain, 18th century, sold for €11,152 (Audap & Associés, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 28 October 2025, lot 149).
