Description
Netherlands, 16th century Presumed portrait of Isabelle de Valois (1545-1568) Oil on oak panel, one plate Presumed portrait of Isabelle de Valois (1545-1568), oil on oak panel, Netherlands School, 16th C. 10.82 x 7.87 in. 27.5 x 20 cm Provenance: Anonymous sale; Berlin, Rudolph Lepke's Kunst-auctions-haus, 31 March 1925, no. 17 (as Style de François Clouet) ; Anonymous sale; Bonn, Auktionhaus Plückbaum, 14 June 2009, no. 1447 ; Acquired at this sale by the current owner; Private collection, Germany This attractive portrait forms part of a body of work consisting of works of similar format, painted on oak panel and carefully depicting jewellery and highly elaborate costumes. Often considered to be 'portraits of belles' associated with the Fontainebleau school, we believe - in a complementary but not contradictory way - that there is a Flemish influence. The works of Gillis Claessens (1536/37 - 1605) seem to us to have been a source of inspiration. The dignity and beauty of our model and the richness of her finery have traditionally identified her as Princess Isabella of Valois, daughter of King Henry II and wife of King Philip II of Spain. Netherlands, 16th century 27.5 x 20 cm
