Reni 89 ½ x 57 ¼ in. 227 x 145.5 cm Provenance: acquired from the artist in Bologna by Francesco I d'Este, Duke of Modena and Reggio (1610-1658), through Cornelio Malvasia, in January 1633 ; Collection of Prince Eugène, Duke of Savoy (1663-1736), in his residence on the Upper Belvedere in Vienna, listed in the inventory of this collection in 1736 (the collection was subsequently purchased en bloc by Charles-Emmanuel III of Savoy in 1741 and transferred to Turin); Charles-Emmanuel III of Savoy Collection, Duke of Savoy and Prince of Piedmont, at the Palazzo Reale in Turin; Brought back from Italy by General Dupont de l'Etang (1765-1840), appointed "provisional extraordinary minister of the French government in Piedmont" from June to mid-August 1800; Collection of General Pierre-Antoine Dupont de l'Etang, probably housed in the Hôtel de Beauvau in Paris until 1850, when the Hôtel Beauvau was sold; Then kept by his family until today; Private collection, France Bibliography: Charles-Nicolas Cochin, Voyage d'Italie, ou Recueil de Notes Sur les Ouvrages de Peinture & de Sculpture, qu'on voit dans les principales villes d'Italie, Paris, 1758, vol.
