In the eighteenth century, the Bolognese school specialised in architectural whims. In addition to ephemeral decorations for theatres and various shows, palace interiors were adorned with sumptuous and ambitious decorations featuring ancient ruins. In addition to these fresco decorations, a large number of easel paintings also adopted the same themes. The artists worked in studios or as a team, so it is sometimes difficult to attribute a particular decoration to one brush or another. The same question applies to this majestic and ambitious canvas, which, according to the dottoressa Elisabetta Landi, is reminiscent of the decorations Bettini created for the Rusconi Dondini Sassoli palace in Bologna.
We would like to thank the dottoressa Elisabetta Landi for her attribution to Giovanni Antonio Bettini in an email dated 20 October 2025 and for her help in writing this notice.
