James Francis Edward Stuart (1688-1766) was the son of Princess Mary of Modena and King James II of England and Ireland and James VII of Scotland. The latter was overthrown during the Great Revolution of 1688 and exiled to Saint-Germain-en-Laye, while his daughter Mary II of England became queen alongside her husband King William III. On his father's death in 1701, James Stuart became a pretender to the throne of England and Scotland, supported by Louis XIV and his Jacobite supporters. However, his adherence to the Roman Catholic Church, following in his father's footsteps, allowed the English Parliament to table a Bill of attainder against him, as the royalists considered it impossible for him to succeed unless he professed Anglicanism. Despite several attempts and uprisings, James Stuart, nicknamed the "Old Pretender", was unable to regain the throne and his father remained the last of the Stuart dynasty in power.
Alexis-Simon Belle, a French painter at the court of King James II when he lived in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, painted several official portraits of James Stuart and the Jacobites. This portrait in armour is typical of the representation of James Stuart, wearing the blue ribbon of the Order of the Garter on his breastplate. A similar portrait from Belle's studio, dated 1712, is in the National Portrait Gallery in London.
