Born in Magny-en-Vexin in 1651, Jean-Baptiste Santerre trained with François Lemaire, then apprenticed with Bon Boulogne in 1675. Strangely, there is almost no record of his work before 1698. Santerre was admitted to the Académie as a history painter in 1704 with Suzanne et les vieillards, now in the Louvre. At the age of fifty-three, he began the official part of his career. Noticed by Louis XIV, he also received strong support from the Regent towards the end of his life. Our painting was engraved by Claude Bricart in 1711 (fig. 1). In a proof kept at the French National Library, a handwritten hand has added in pen "portrait of Aubert, pupil of Santerre". However, nothing is known about this Aubert. So we cannot be sure that this is the model painted here. In a second state of the engraving, the letter was modified to make it a portrait of Cartouche. This change must have been made in the context of Cartouche's trial, which opened in 1721. Famous for his fantasy figures, Santerre used his paintings to depict character traits. His body of work shows that he was more interested in the psychology of his characters than in physical likeness. This is an intimate evocation of a young man playing soldier, reminiscent of other bust portraits by the painter, such as La jeune femme jouant de la guitare (Musée des Ursulines, Mâcon).
