Portrayed as Minerva by the vibrant brush of the Flemish artist Juste d'Egmont, our model plunges us into the rocky world of the last breaths of the great French aristocracy's pretensions to rule. In the context of the two Frondes, our model was not the first to be portrayed as Minerva, and - with La Grande Mademoiselle in the lead - all the heroines of the great families wishing to destabilise the State in order to gain a little more power were represented as this armed divinity.
Juste d'Egmont's career flourished in France, where he worked with Rubens on the famous cycle of the Life of Marie de Médicis in the Luxembourg Palace. He became a member of the Académie de Saint-Luc and a founding member of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1648, and worked for prestigious patrons including the Princes of Condé, the House of Orléans, Louis XIII and Louis XIV. Her fiery brushwork and Rubensian palette are reflected in our portrait, bringing a dynamic that differs markedly from the wiser works of Louis Ferdinand Elle the elder or Henri and Charles Beaubrun. As the eldest sister of the Grand Condé, our model was at the heart of the power struggles close to the crown, a fragile crown under the minority of the young Louis XIV, who never forgot the lessons of the two Frondes. The Condé and Montmorency branches were decidedly tumultuous: uncle and cousins executed, father and brothers imprisoned. A rebellious and tempestuous woman herself, Anne-Geneviève de Bourbon-Condé (1619-1679) owed her family's salvation in her youth only to her brother's victory at Rocroi in 1643, but also to her intervention as negotiator in the Treaty of Wesphalie: an ideal opportunity to have herself portrayed as Minerva, goddess of the arts, intelligence, good warfare and just peace.
