Jean Barbault was one of those French artists who were unable to return to France after enjoying the pleasures of Rome. Although he failed the Prix de Rome competition in 1745, he was admitted to the Académie de France in Rome in 1747 thanks to the protection of its director Jean-François de Troy. On the death of the latter in 1752, now deprived of protection, Barbault had to leave the Palazzo Mancini. Presumably for financial reasons, he gave up painting to devote himself to publishing.
Our painting bears witness to his stay in Rome, during which he immersed himself in the works of contemporary Italian artists such as Piranesi, who had a profound influence on his art. Barbault, like others, built up a repertoire of architectural motifs on the spot, which he used in his painted and engraved caprices.
