Nicolas Vleughels spent two years in Venice from March 1707. The consequences of this stay were particularly important. Copies after Veronese were at the heart of his painting and engraving practice as well as his teaching, while he was director of the Académie de France in Rome. He commissioned copies of the sixteenth-century Venetian master from Charles Natoire, Etienne Jeaurat and Carle van Loo. It was undoubtedly from these Venetian masters that he found the inspiration for our painting.
Nicolas Vleughels produced at least one other painting depicting The Abduction of Europa, which we know from an engraving by Madeleine Horthemels in 1723, the same year as our panel.
