An 18th-century painter from Montalban, Jean Valette-Falgores, known as Valette-Penot, specialised in trompe-l'œil. Painting easel pictures for the local aristocracy, he also created a set of decorations for the Château de Beausoleil near Montauban around 1770. His reputation quickly spread to other parts of the kingdom, as he painted a series of trompe-l'œil for the furniture in the curiosity cabinet of Breton art lover Christophe-Paul de Robien1.
A number of objects regularly represented by Valette-Penot, such as a pipe, a quill pen, playing cards and an old engraving, are hung on a framed wooden background. Valette-Penot's trompe-l'œil, like that of his Nordic predecessors, is not without references to the vanitas register. The split plaster medallion, crudely repaired, and the torn and scratched print contain allusions to the end of life and the passage of time, reminding us of our mortal condition.
