In 1752-1753, Carle van Loo (1705-1765) commissioned Madame de Pompadour to produce a series of four allegories of the fine arts (now in San Francisco) for the Salon de Compagnie at the Château de Bellevue. Distributed by engraving, these works were a great success, as evidenced by the many repeats painted1. Our paintings by Carle van Loo's nephew, Charles Amédée, were produced during the painter's second stay in Potsdam. Although their subject matter is reminiscent of Carle's work, they differ in their composition, in that they depict little winged lovers rather than children disguised as painters, sculptors, architects and musicians. We can assume that our paintings were commissioned by King Frederick II of Prussia (1712-1786) to decorate one of his residences. The fact that Carle van Loo declined Frederick II's invitation to work for him and was replaced by Amédée supports this assumption.
1. Repeats with variations of these canvases were recently sold in our galleries: anonymous sale; Paris, Artcurial, 23 September 2025, no. 12.
