Our painting was once given to William Scrots by Max Friedländer, whose conventional name at the time was 'Master to the Regent of the Netherlands, Mary of Hungary'. This portraitist, first mentioned in 1537 as a court painter for Mary of Hungary (1505-1558), was then active in England. He took over Hans Holbein's duties in 1546 for King Henry VIII and then Edward VI.
