Our tondo, depicting a picnic by a river, is an illustration of the month of May. In all likelihood, our little panel is part of an incomplete series on the twelve months of the year, of which seven paintings are now known and identified. These seven paintings, described in the monographic work on Jacob and Abel Grimmer, were presented by the Galerie de Jonckheere in 1986.
These small tondi, which Jacob Grimmer and his son Abel specialised in, had several aims: to offer an edifying discourse, sometimes with the help of the Holy Scriptures; to provide an element of intellectual reflection or meditation for the study walls on which they were often hung; and finally, to flatter the wealth of the Flemish countryside and towns. The Four Seasons and the Twelve Months of the Year, associated with man's seasonal activities, are major themes in the art of Abel Grimmer, who drew his inspiration from the engravings of Pieter Brueghel the Elder and Hans Bol.
