Turin, Archivio di Stato, 2003-2004, p. 149 Related works : Ignazio Collino (1724-1793), Hercules and the Lion of Nemea, patinated terracotta, height: 70.2cm, Turin, Academia Albertina. Signed and dated "Bardi Fecit 1790", this impressive terracotta depicting Hercules and the Lion of Nemea was made by Andrea Bardi after a model created by Ignazio Collino (1724-1793), of which we know a terracotta version (Turin, Academia Albertina, inv. 376) and another in marble (Château de Ferrières-en-Brie). Produced between 1751 and 1754, Ignazio Collino's terracotta version could be similar to the "pequeno Hercoles con la rueca" described by Abbé Andrès during his visit to the Collino brothers' workshop in 1791. The gaps in the evidence about Andrea Bardi's career make it impossible to know how he came to know about Collino's work. The popularity of the model, much appreciated for its virtuosity, is nevertheless attested to by the numerous revivals of it. These include the versions made by Giuseppe Bolina between 1760 and 1761 for the Salon d'Hercule in the Palazzo di Racconigi and the reliefs in the former Palazzo Caraglio, now part of Turin's Philharmonic Academy. Our terracotta could be a youthful work by Andrea Bardi, whose presence is later attested by the famous Danish neoclassical sculptor Thorvaldsen between 1819 and 1834. In particular, he worked on Jason with the Golden Fleece (Musée Thorvaldsen, Copenhagen, n°inv. A822) and Thorvaldsen's Christ for the church of Notre-Dame in the Danish capital. We would like to thank Daniela Gallo for the valuable information she provided on the artist Andrea Bardi. The auction price is exclusive of VAT.
