Edouard-Gustave-Louis MILLET de MARCILLY (Paris, 1811 - Pau,1891) The lion hunt Bronze with brown patina Signed 'Millet' on the terrace The lion haunt, bronze, brown patina, by E.-G.-L. Millet de Marcilly 29.92 x 31.49 x 20.47 in. 76 x 80 x 52 cm A pupil of Justin Lequien père (1796-1881), Edouard-Gustave-Louis Millet de Marcilly, often confused with the artist of the same name Aimé Millet, made his debut at the 1852 Salon with the plaster version of this bronze entitled "The Lion Hunt" (under no. 1488). Inspired by the Orientalist movement in vogue at the time, his group depicts an Arab rider saving another man from a lion attack. It is likely that the artist was aware of works depicting the same theme executed in the 1830s by the painter Horace Vernet1 and the sculptor Antoine Louis Barye2. With its imposing size, our bronze remarkably expresses this heroism even before Eugène Delacroix completed his masterly composition of the Lion Hunt presented at the Universal Exhibition of 18553. 1.
