Portrait of Eugène Delacroix, terracotta and patinated plaster, signed, by L. J. Franceschi
H. 13.38 in.
Six years after Eugène Delacroix's death, in 1869, the French state commissioned Louis Julien Franceschi, a former pupil of François Rude, to create a bust of the painter to adorn the Palais de l'Institut. After his death, many people were outraged at the lack of recognition given to the master of Liberty Guiding the People. The first of these was Henri Fantin-Latour who, shocked by the insignificance of the funeral procession that accompanied him to the cemetery, painted the famous Hommage à Delacroix in 1864.
The marble originally commissioned was never made, for reasons that still elude us. All that remains of this project is our bust, which is closer to a modello than to a perfectly finished work. Our object, like a preparatory sketch, brings the model to life with an irregular, vibrant surface, an effect accentuated by the marks, still visible and sometimes brutal, of the sculptor's work. The model's personality - conquering, confident, with a piercing gaze - is brilliantly captured by our artist, whose admiration for Delacroix is undeniably reflected in our portrait.
