Comment:
Renowned for his statuettes depicting peasant life and historicist subjects, as well as for the portrait busts of his contemporaries, which were regularly purchased by the French state, Maurice Favre here makes a brilliant attempt at a profile portrait in bas-relief, carved directly into a thick slab of marble. Our sculpture was presented at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1896 under the title "Portrait de Melle Louise Trésal", and probably represents an intimate of the sculptor. It is an undisguised tribute to the marbles of the Italian Renaissance and to the leading artists of the Quattrocento, such as Desiderio da Settignano and Donatello. The young woman's face stands out against a curved frame of columns, over which nature seems to be gaining ground with its fine flowers and leaves delicately carved into the marble, testifying to our sculptor's virtuoso craftsmanship on the one hand, and letting us guess at the free and wild temperament of our lovely model on the other.
