With her melancholy theme of the femme fatale, Lamia embodies the ideals of the Symbolist movement of the late 19th century. Lamia, a character from John Keats's poem of the same name (1819), is a nymph trapped in the form of a snake. With the help of Hermes, she takes on human form and wins the love of the mortal Lycius. When her true nature is revealed at their wedding, she disappears and her husband dies of grief. Our sculpture evokes Lamia's tragic fate by illustrating the following line: "Then with a frightened scream she vanished".
