Description
Paul César HELLEU (Vannes, 1859 – Paris, 1927)
Study of five heads, including Ellen Helleu and Madame Clarigny
Three pencil drawings
Signed lower right
28.5 x 44 cm
Provenance: Private collection, Île-de-France
This sheet brings together several studies of two models close to the artist. The two heads at the bottom centre and bottom right depict Ellen Helleu, daughter of Paul-César Helleu. Madame Clarigny (Lucie Cucheval-Clarigny), sister of Alice Helleu, can be identified in the top right-hand corner and in the bottom left-hand corner. The figure in the top left-hand corner, seen from behind, could also represent Madame Clarigny, although this cannot be stated with certainty.
We would like to thank the committee for confirming the authenticity of this drawing and for the related information. Our drawing is listed in the catalogue raisonné of Paul-César Helleu’s drawings under the reference APCH DE1-4346.
