Paul César HELLEU (Vannes, 1859 – Paris, 1927) Study of five heads, including Ellen Helleu and Madame Clarigny Three pencil drawings Signed lower right 28.5 x 44 cm Provenance: Private collection, Île-de-France This sheet brings together several studies of two models close to the artist. The two heads at the bottom centre and bottom right depict Ellen Helleu, daughter of Paul-César Helleu. Madame Clarigny (Lucie Cucheval-Clarigny), sister of Alice Helleu, can be identified in the top right-hand corner and in the bottom left-hand corner. The figure in the top left-hand corner, seen from behind, could also represent Madame Clarigny, although this cannot be stated with certainty.
