17th-century Dutch school (Circle of Johann-Wilhelm Baur) An elegant group at the foot of a Roman villa Oil on canvas 62 x 87 cm Provenance: Private collection, Paris Born into a prominent family of goldsmiths in Strasbourg, Johann Willem Baur spent much of his life in Italy, where he sketched villas and palaces with great enthusiasm. A painter of miniatures in watercolour and on vellum, as well as a draughtsman and engraver, he worked in 17th-century Rome, where few German artists achieved such significant success. The composition depicted in our painting—featuring, in the foreground, a long flight of steps flanked by a curved balustrade leading to a palace—was rendered on several occasions by the artist1. Our painting can be linked to a gouache on parchment signed by the artist (12.5 x 17.3 cm, formerly on display at the Michel Segoura Gallery) as well as with another painting attributed to Johann Wilhelm Baur in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt (inv. no. 1428). 1.
