Joris van SON (Antwerp, 1623 – 1667) Composition with fruit and pumpkins in a landscape Oil on canvas Signed and dated ‘J VAN SON F / 1658’ in the lower right-hand corner (Restored) 57 x 83.5 cm Provenance: Anonymous sale; Moulins, Auction House, Mr Sadde, 23 April 1991, lot 107; Acquired at this sale by the current owner; Private collection, France An Antwerp artist, Joris van Son became master of the city’s Guild of Saint Luke between 1642 and 1643. Among his best-known paintings are depictions of banquets or ‘pronkstillevens’ – elaborate compositions showing tables laden with food, drinking vessels and exotic collectables. He also produced smaller-scale works featuring fruit arrangements and regularly painted garlands and wreaths of fruit. In the 17th century, still life was a highly developed art form in the Netherlands, with a sophisticated pictorial and symbolic vocabulary. The migration of Flemish artists northwards in search of religious freedom and economic opportunities during the Spanish occupation of Flanders fostered an exchange of talent and ideas, and it is not surprising that the styles of still lifes from both centres overlap considerably, with few distinct differences. Indeed, some of Joris van Son’s compositions bear a resemblance to those of artists from the Northern Netherlands. Our painting can be compared with another work by the artist, formerly in the W. Horton collection.¹ This work features a similar formal composition, albeit on a smaller scale: apricots and grapes have been placed in a blue and white bowl, which is itself surrounded by bunches and vines of grapes, a squash and cherries, whilst a landscape at sunset frames the composition on the left. 1.
