Attributed to Charles de LA FOSSE (Paris, 1636–1716) Jesus Raising Jairus’s Daughter Oil on canvas Bears the number ‘173’ on the stretcher on the reverse (Previous restorations) 79 x 63 cm Provenance: Possibly the painting listed in the artist’s posthumous inventory under no. 12: ‘Our Lord healing the daughter of the widow Naée (sic)’, valued at 100 livres; Possibly the painting listed in the posthumous inventory of Elisabeth Beguin under no. 57: ‘Our Lord Healing the Daughter of Jahor’, valued at 50 livres; Probably from the collection of Ange-Laurent de Lalive de Jully; Its sale, Paris, 1764, no. 232, under an erroneous title: “The Resurrection of St Peter’s Mother-in-Law, by LA FOSSE, on canvas, two feet three inches high by one foot ten inches wide [73 x 59 cm]. This painting, with its vigorous colouring and fine play of light, was engraved by Moreau. It is the small version of the large painting that La Fosse painted at the Chartreux monastery"; Probably from his sale, Paris, 5 March 1770, no. 45: “The Resurrection of Saint Peter’s Mother: a small version of the large painting at the Chartreux, which ranks first among La Fosse’s works. P.P. 117 Engraving: By Moreau Between 1698 and 1700, Charles de La Fosse took part in a commission for a series of paintings illustrating the life of Christ for the church of the Carthusian monastery in the Luxembourg district of Paris. The ‘Raising of Jairus’s Daughter’, of which our painting is a ‘riccordo’ and which is now housed in the Parisian church of Notre-Dame-de-Bercy, forms part of this series. Reproducing the large Carthusian composition (390 x 290 cm) in a format suited to a private setting, our recently rediscovered painting is probably the one listed in the Lalive de Jully collection. Madame Clémentine Gustin-Gomez kindly confirmed the authenticity of this painting following a visual examination in 2022, though she subsequently revised her opinion.
