Charles Robert LESLIE, R.A. (London, 1794 – 1859) Portrait of Henry Richard Vassall Fox, 3rd Baron Holland (1773–1840) Oil on panel, parquet-style Unframed 28 x 22.5 cm Provenance: Private collection, Île-de-France Charles Robert Leslie was born in London to American parents and, after spending several years in the United States with his family, returned to his hometown. Backed by prestigious recommendations and a highly promising talent for painting, he joined the Royal Academy. He rose through the ranks, becoming an associate member in 1821 before being officially appointed a full academician in 1827. His painting is irrevocably imbued with this new Romantic artistic movement, the first stirrings of which originated across the Channel. Our portrait represents an interesting rediscovery within our artist’s body of work. It depicts Henry Richard Vassall Fox seated in his library. He was one of the most prominent figures of the Whig Liberal Party in England, known in particular for having vehemently protested against the conditions of Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile. As evidence of the enduring fame of our subject (who was also portrayed by François-Xavier Fabre, amongst others) and of our panel, the latter was engraved so that it could be made available to as wide an audience as possible (fig. 1).
