Description
Late 18th-century Italian school Bust of Christ Terracotta Height: 46 cm Related work: Agnolo di Polo, Christ the Saviour, c. 1500–1510, terracotta (H. 55 cm; W. 45 cm), Florence, Horne Museum (inv. 952). In the tradition of Renaissance busts of Christ, for which the artists Verrochio and later Agnolo di Polo were the most skilful pioneers, this bust, dated by thermoluminescence to a range of 1760 to 1825, bears witness to the continuation of this type of terracotta Christ figure in Italy in the centuries that followed.
