Alphonse Amédée CORDONNIER (La Madeleine-lez-Lille, 1848 – Paris, 1930) Bust of a young woman in Renaissance dress, also known as ‘Dame Bérangère’ Patinated terracotta Height: 73 cm Provenance: Galerie Anastasia Hirt, Paris; Acquired from the gallery by the current owner; Private collection, Paris   Alphonse-Amédée Cordonnier studied at the academic art schools in Lille. Thanks to a scholarship from the Nord department, he continued his studies in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he was taught by Auguste Dumont and Gabriel-Jules Thomas. He was a resident at the Wicar Foundation in Rome from 1873, remaining there until 1877, the year in which he won the Prix de Rome for sculpture. A regular exhibitor at the Salon from 1874 onwards, he enjoyed some success there, winning numerous awards, before securing a silver medal at the 1889 World’s Fair and then a gold medal at the 1900 World’s Fair. Our elegant bust is directly related to the marble sculpture that Cordonnier exhibited at the 1890 Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, depicting a 16th-century bust (cat. no. 1250), before it was reproduced in porcelain by the Sèvres porcelain manufactory. Executed with great finesse, the work clearly illustrates the sculptor’s devotion to his Renaissance predecessors, excelling in combining historical accuracy, psychological sensitivity and decorative nobility. Draped in a richly ornamented bodice and wearing an imposing wimple with geometric folds, the figure adopts an air of gentle introspection. Leaning slightly forwards, her face bathed in subdued light, she appears lost in silent meditation.
