Maurice FAVRE (Paris, 1875 – 1919) "LOUISE" Marble bas-relief Signed ‘M. FAVRE’ lower right Titled at the bottom 77 x 49 cm Provenance: Anonymous sale; Paris, Yellow Peacock, 16 June 2025, lot 269; Acquired at this sale by the current owner; Private collection, Paris Exhibitions: Salon des Artistes Français, 1896, Paris, no. 3430 Renowned for his statuettes depicting peasant life or historicist subjects, as well as for his bust portraits of his contemporaries—which the State regularly acquired— Maurice Favre brilliantly attempts here a profile portrait in bas-relief, carved directly into a thick slab of marble. This sculpture, presented at the 1896 Salon des Artistes Français under the title ‘Portrait of Mademoiselle Louise Trésal’, probably depicts a close friend of the sculptor. It constitutes an undisguised homage to the marbles of the Italian Renaissance and to leading artists of the Quattrocento such as Desiderio da Settignano and Donatello. The young woman’s face stands out against a curved frame of columns, upon which nature seems to be gaining ground with its delicate flowers and leaves, very finely carved from the marble, testifying, on the one hand, to our sculptor’s virtuoso craftsmanship and, on the other, allowing us to glimpse the free and untamed spirit of our ravishing model.
