European School, c. 1900 Bust of the Madonna of Nuremberg Plaster with double patina (glass marbles for the eyes) Height: 49 cm Provenance: Artwins Gallery, Paris; Acquired from the gallery by the current owner; Private collection, Paris As indicated in the archives of the Cité de l’Architecture, the model of the so-called Nuremberg Virgin, regarded as a masterpiece of late German Gothic sculpture and formerly attributed to Veit Stoss, was transported to Paris in 1883 to be cast by the casting workshop of the Musée de Sculpture Comparée. The work, entitled ‘The Praying Woman’, appeared in the foundry’s sales catalogue for the first time around 1886. European School, circa 1900
