Léon-Noël DELAGRANGE (Orléans, 1872 – Bordeaux, 1910) Love and Youth Original plaster cast Inscribed and signed ‘to my friend Ferry / DELAGRANGE’ in the bottom right-hand corner Height: 92 cm Provenance: Private collection, Paris Although known for his exceptional career as an aviator, which saw him collaborate with Louis Blériot and the Voisin brothers, Léon-Noël Delagrange first achieved success as a sculptor. A pupil of Louis-Ernest Barrias and Charles Vital-Cornu at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français as early as 1894 and specialised in producing small sculptures for interior decoration. A rare example of his more ambitious works, our large original plaster cast serves as a direct precursor to *Amour et Jeunesse* (*Love and Youth*), a group presented at the 1901 Salon (cat. no. 3124) and depicting the passionate embrace of a nude couple. The figures, described by Yvanhoé Rambosson (1) as possessing “a true harmony of lines and a delightful sensitivity”, seem to be emerging from the rock in a highly Symbolist spirit. The dedication “to my friend Ferry” incised on the plinth likely refers to the painter Jean-Georges Ferry, Delagrange’s neighbour in Montmartre.  1.
