Louis JANMOT (Lyon, 1814 – 1892) Study for the fresco in the artist’s house in Bagneux, ‘The Artist’s Family’, and Study after the ‘Borghese Dancers’ Oil on canvas (original canvas) (Not mounted on a stretcher) Unframed 34.5 x 59 cm Provenance: Collection of Anne-Marie de Pessonneaux du Pujet (great-granddaughter of Louis Janmot); Then, by descent, to his grandson; Private collection in south-west France A native of Lyon, Louis Janmot was steeped from his earliest childhood in a profound Catholic devotion which is evident in his work. Although his art is highly distinctive, he is associated, alongside Hippolyte Flandrin and Victor Orsel, with the Lyon School. Founded by Pierre Révoil in the early 19th century, this school is characterised by works on religious or historical subjects inspired by the Renaissance, executed in a refined and meticulous style. Janmot received a particularly rich philosophical education at the Collège Royal de Lyon, which provided a lasting source of inspiration for his art. After training in painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, he travelled to Paris, where he joined Ingres’s studio in 1833, before continuing his apprenticeship in Rome. Three years later, the artist returned to his hometown, where he distinguished himself through the intensity of his output. Having suffered a critical setback with his ‘Poème de l’âme’ cycle, Janmot finally decided to return to Paris in 1861 and settled in Bagneux, at 31 Rue Pavée, in a house whose walls he decorated with frescoes. Our oil on canvas, divided into two sections, constitutes a double study executed in preparation for the creation of these frescoes. The upper section is painted after the ancient bas-relief of the Borghese Dancers, whilst the lower section is a sketch for *The Artist’s Family*, for which we have the preparatory cartoon for the fresco (fig. 1). These two scenes, framed by fluted Corinthian pilasters, open out onto idyllic landscapes and blend subtly into the planned decorative ensemble, which has since been lost.
