August AUDENAERT (1842–1953) The Drunkenness of Bacchus Oil on canvas (original canvas) Signed, located and dated ‘Aug. Audenaert St Nikolaas 1914’ in the lower right-hand corner (Restorations) 114 x 141.5 cm Little is known about August Audenaert apart from the remarkable fact that he passed away just before his 111th birthday. Our painting, undoubtedly one of the masterpieces by this still little-known artist, stands as a precious testament to the formidable skill of a man who was almost certainly trained at the Saint Luke Academy in Ghent. Here he presents us with an impressive depiction of a drunken Bacchus, whose darkened feet allow us to imagine the complex wanderings of the hours leading up to our hero’s slumber, and which stands in rather symbolic contrast to the almost immaculate marble that makes up virtually the entire rest of the canvas.  August AUDENAERT (1842–1953) 114 x 141.5 cm
