Description
[BRITTANY]
Jacques-Louis LE GAC DE LANSALUT (1758–1835); a Breton magistrate and councillor at the Parliament of Brittany, who later served as a justice of the peace in Morlaix.
A 2.5-page autograph letter (a genuine insight into a minor detail of the daily life of a provincial dignitary), signed and addressed to Mr Louyer-Villermay* and dated 1 February 1811 in Morlaix. This letter may be regarded as a first ‘draft’; it contains numerous crossings-out and corrections. The handwriting is difficult to decipher.
Hoping for a post as deputy to the imperial public prosecutor (a candidacy discussed at length in the second part of the letter); the writer commissions a wig from a Parisian hairdresser ‘The offers you have kindly made to me prompt me to write to you to ask you to have a wig made for me at Guillaume the hairdresser’s, situated on Boulevard d’Antin at the corner of Rue de la Michaudière (…) I have seen some well-made wigs; I have enclosed two paper strips here, which are the measurements of my head (…)’ This is followed by very detailed instructions regarding the appearance, the colour of the hair, the overall look and the type of strands, the lining of the wig, the price and delivery. A fine example. Dimensions: 17 x 28.5 cm.
*An old note reads ‘Louyer-Villermay, his business representative in Paris’.
